No surprise here, but T-Mobile has been prepping a low-end Android phone called the Prism for quite some time now, and it’s finally time for the little guy to make its official debut. With a 3.5-inch HVGA display, 3.2MP fixed-focus camera and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), it won’t be the stuff dreams are made of. The CPU is also unspecified, which leads us to believe that T-Mo is leaving it out of the talking points for a reason — yesterday’s leak indicated that we can expect it to be 600MHz. That said, plenty of potential buyers wanting an inexpensive smartphone may be easily persuaded by its $20 price on contract (with a $50 mail-in rebate) or $150 without any sort of commitment. The Huawei-made Prism will make its first appearance at Best Buy on May 6th, followed by Walmart on the 9th and official retail channels on the 23rd. Riders at significant risk for head injury

BOSTON A national rise in public bike sharing programs could mean less air pollution and more exercise, an environmental and health win-win for people in the cities that host them, but according to researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, more than 80 percent of bike share riders are putting themselves at significant health risk by not wearing helmets.

“Head injury accounts for about a third of all bicycle injuries and about three-quarters of bicycle related deaths, so these are some pretty shocking numbers,” says lead author and emergency medicine physician Christopher Fischer, MD.

The results of the study are published in the April 30 online edition of the Annals of Emergency Medicine.

Bike sharing programs where riders rent bicycles from kiosks located throughout a metropolitan area have become popular in European cities like Paris and Barcelona. There are 15 bike sharing programs in operation in the United States and 30 more under development.

The study examined the Capital Bike share program that began in the Washington, DC area in September, 2010 and Boston’s Hubway bike share program launched in July, 2011 with 61 kiosk locations and 600 bikes.

Fischer and team used trained observers to collect data on adult cyclist helmet usage in Boston and Washington over 43 observation periods totaling more than 50 hours. The sites were located near bike rental kiosks but all bikers, whether they rented bikes or rode their own, were recorded. More than 3,000 bicyclists were observed.

“We were surprised to find that of all bicyclists, more than half rode without helmets,” says Fischer. “But it was even more concerning to learn that four out of five bike share riders were out there without helmets.”

Studies show that “helmet use is associated with decreased rates of head injury and mortality in riders of all ages, with bicycle helmets decreasing the risk of head and brain injury by 65 to 88 percent,” write the authors.

While helmet wearing is encouraged in the Boston and Washington, DC bike sharing programs and websites offer locations where renters can purchase helmets helmet use is not a requirement for bike rental.

“Bike sharing programs have the potential to offer a lot of benefits to cyclists and cities, but it’s important to encourage safe cycling,” says Fischer. “We know that wearing a helmet reduces the risk of head injury dramatically and we believe that helmets should be more readily available at bike rental sites.”

Some tools, like a hammer and screwdriver, are a necessity in every household. Others are designed to save you time, but they aren?t truly a necessity. A paint sprayer falls into this category. You could use a roller and paint brush, but the sprayer will save you time and spare your arm. Painting the Fence

Wood fences are refined, but they require regular maintenance. Painting a wood fence by hand is tedious, and the chore can take days to complete. Once you are finished, you might feel like your arm is going to fall off. A sprayer, however, turns this vacation chore into an easy Saturday project. Trim the grass extremely short on both sides of the fence and lay some newspapers under it to catch the overspray. With that minor preparation, you are ready to paint the fence in the morning and then enjoy the rest of your day.

Short Work of Porch Railings

Faded and peeling porch rails can make your entire home look tired and in disrepair. Putting a fresh coat of paint on all those spindles can take the better part of your weekend. You could try to convince some friends to help, or you could pull out the sprayer and make this a fast project. Place newspapers under the railing to catch the overspray. Tape it to the porch around posts. Enlist the help of a friend to hold up a large piece of cardboard or a drop cloth while you spray the spindles. This will catch the overspray and prevent it from going all over your landscaping or porch.

Interior Bedrooms

Even if your home has vinyl siding or brick, you can still use the sprayer to cover large interior rooms. Ideal for textured surfaces, a sprayer will also put a beautiful coating of paint on smooth walls. Take the time to shield trim, floor and fixtures with painter?s tape and newspapers. Rather than spending an entire day painting a room, you can make it a morning project and then go enjoy the evening.

Ceilings

Notoriously hard to paint, large ceilings can leave your shoulders aching and leave you wondering why you tackled the project. However, you can purchase special attachments for paint sprayers that will make short work of this chore. Affordable and available at your local home improvement store, these attachments will let you paint a ceiling in record time.

Sprayer or Brush

There will be times when a roller and brush is the better choice. Before pulling out your sprayer for a job, you should take into account how long it will take you to tape off and prepare the area if you choose the sprayer. Sprayers also take longer to clean, so be sure to consider that time. However, you will find that most large jobs are better suited to the sprayer. The sprayer will make the job faster, the coverage will be more complete and it will be easier on your arms.

There are many benefits to adding a paint sprayer to your collection of painting tools. While you won?t use it on every job, you will be glad to have it when those larger chores come up. Invest in a high quality sprayer, and be sure to clean it thoroughly after every use so it will last for years to come.

If you’re envious of the?Titanic director?James Cameron’s recent dive to the ocean’s deepest depths, perhaps scooping up this vintage literal yellow submarine in auction could quell a bit of that appetite for marine adventure. The sub went up for auction in tandem with a guitar signed by none of than Sir Paul McCartney himself, though it appears that a collector has already snatched it up to the tune of $58,000.

The?Beatles lover’s submarine may look like its cartoony counterpart, but it’s actually a formerly fully working submersible. The modified 1969 Kittredge K350 1ATM submarine, which seats two and can travel to a depth of 350 feet, was put up for bidding by classic auto auction house Barrett-Jackson.

Bummed that you won’t be cruising the ocean’s shallow depths strumming along to the 1966 Beatles hit? You do have a ridiculously?high-quality remake of the classic psychedelic Beatles movie to look forward to, so all isn’t quite lost.

Barcelona, Bayern reach Champions semis

LONDON (AP) -Lionel Messi swept holder Barcelona into the Champions League semifinals for the fifth successive year on Tuesday while becoming the competition’s most prolific scorer in a single season.

The Argentina forward scored a pair of first-half penalty kicks and Andres Iniesta added another goal after the break to give Barcelona a 3-1 victory over AC Milan following a 0-0 draw in Italy.

Messi’s 14th Champions League goal this season surpassed Ruud van Nistelrooy’s tally in the 2002-03 campaign.

Ivica Olic also scored twice on Tuesday to ensure Bayern Munich joined fellow four-time champion Barcelona in the semifinals.

Bayern emulated its 2-0 first-leg victory over Marseille to advance 4-0 on aggregate.

Barcelona was helped by the two penalties against Milan – the second for the type of shirt pulling in the area that often goes unpunished – but coach Pep Guardiola said the victory was well deserved.

“You can talk all you want about referees but that makes it five straight semifinals, the fruits of our talent and a lot of work,” Guardiola said. “We deserved more than to just get through so I’m satisfied.”

Bayern will likely face Real Madrid in the semifinals, with the Spanish leaders protecting a 3-0 lead over Cypriot team APOEL Nicosia on Wednesday. Chelsea will play Barcelona in the last four if the London club can defend a 1-0 lead over Benfica.

But with Pep Guardiola’s side seemingly impervious in Europe, Barca is primed to become the first team to defend the European Cup since the Champions League’s inception in the 1992-93 season.

Protecting Messi will be key, though, with the Argentina forward having already netted 58 goals this season in all competitions.

He slotted his first into the net after 11 minutes at the Camp Nou after being brought down in the penalty area by Luca Antonini.

There was a brief response from the Italian champions against the run of play, with Antonio Nocerino leveling in the 32nd.

Robinho picked out Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the former Barcelona striker slipped the ball through for Nocerino to strike past Victor Valdes.

But that away goal wasn’t enough for Milan as Messi restored the hosts’ lead in the 41st from the spot after Alessandro Nesta hauled Sergio Busquets down. Messi’s 14th European Cup goal of the season matched Mazzola Altafini’s 49-year-old record.

“Sometimes the referee made too many concessions,” Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said. “I don’t know if it proved decisive. We made a mistake on the first penalty but he helped on the second. Playing Barca is never easy.”

While Messi was denied a hat trick at the start of the second half when his shot was blocked, the ball fell for Iniesta to extend Barca’s lead from a tight angle.

“We had to work really hard against a great side and we are thrilled to be in the semifinals,” Iniesta said.

Milan has not reached the semifinals since winning the Champions League in 2007.

But Bayern is into the last four for the second time in the three years thanks in part to Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes resting Mario Gomez in favor of Olic.

And on a rare start, Olic delivered.

His first goal was an easy tap-in into the net in the 13th after former Marseille player Franck Ribery glided past the visiting defense to set up the Croatian.

Ribery also helped to create the second by feeding David Alaba down the left flank, and the Austrian midfielder crossed for Olic to nip ahead of his marker and score from close range.

“Both goals were very well played,” Bayern coach Jupp Heynckes said. “I’m happy for Olic because he not only played well, but he scored and had a huge impact on the game. He’s a bonus for the rest of the season. We have hard matches ahead of us and I need players like him who can decide games.”

43% of recent U.S. smartphone buyers bought iPhone

Nielsen has wrapped up their latest market research data, and in the three months leading up to February, 43% of U.S. smartphone buyers got an iPhone. By comparison, 48% had bought an Android phone, and 5% picked up a BlackBerry.
